Start with the learner

Begin with what the student can do, what interests them, and where a task becomes difficult. Use classroom observations, student work, and learner feedback to identify the next step.

Make learning accessible

Build required IEP and 504 accommodations into directions, materials, practice, and assessment. Use tools such as visual models, guided notes, chunked tasks, and response options when they fit the learner and the goal. Make any agreed changes to learning expectations explicit.

Teach skills step by step

Plan explicit modeling, supported practice, and opportunities to apply learning. Use organizers, vocabulary instruction, and clear examples to make thinking visible. Build independence while continuing the supports the learner needs.

Check understanding and adjust

Use brief checks for understanding, work samples, and clear rubric criteria to see what is working. Give specific feedback, revisit skills, and adjust pacing or support based on the evidence.
